Getting the best from your removal company - how to find the best in the business

Like any service that you pay for, whether it be a tailor or a plumber, you want to know that you are getting good value for money. You won’t spend a lot on a job unless you know it’s going to be good, and certain things like reputation will precede those services that cannot be experienced first-hand. With domestic removals, you will no doubt want to ensure that you are as getting your moneys worth, as the price of a removals company can be seriously high. Or this reason, it can be useful to know how to spot the better removals firms from the bunch, as unlike other services, reputation is not as obvious, given that people move house so rarely. There are a few ways in which you can do this, and it usually comes down to a few little filters that you can apply whilst doing your research on each company.

First off, if you truly are looking for the best of the best, or if you want to remove the element of risk form your search for a removals company, there is a lot to be said for looking in to using a removals company form either the ‘Guild of British Removers and Storers’ or the ‘British Association of Removers’. These associations are set up to ensure that a standard of quality can be expected from their members. Removals firms want to be part of these associations because they understand that the customer needs a seal of approval, so it works both ways. If you are looking to reduce the risk of getting a bad service, this is the way to go, as reports of bad service or going against the codes of conduct that the associations set out (which you can read online) will result in sanctions from the group. You may find that member firms will charge more than others however, given that they have to put more work in to maintain the high standards expected of them.

Another good way of filtering removals companies is to look at online reviews to see if there is any word on how the firms in your area have performed for others. You will find that the companies are given a score and then each previous customer will give a run down of their experiences. In the case that the companies receive consistent remarks in either a negative or positive way, then you will get to understand the ins and outs of the service that they provide. Be wary of one off issues however, as they can often be caused by external issues. Ask about the things that you have read when you talk to each company on the phone.

You will gain a lot from simply talking to each removals company on the phone. The way in which they speak to you will imply a lot about how they treat their customers; after all a surly voice at the other end of the line does not suggest that you will be getting the warmest of services from the removals team. Whilst negotiating the deal, you will find that the best removals companies will always require a house survey to ensure that you are getting the right service at the right price. Anyone who tries to organize things solely on the phone is likely going to change their prices beyond the initial quote!
